Setting Up a Cash App Account: Step-by-Step Guide
Cash App is a free mobile payment service that lets you send and receive money, invest in stocks or Bitcoin, and even get a debit card. It’s available on iOS and Android devices and is owned by Block, Inc. (formerly Square). Setting up an account takes just a few minutes. Here’s how to get started:
1. Download the App
- Go to the Apple App Store (for iOS) or Google Play Store (for Android).
- Search for “Cash App” (developed by Square, Inc. or Block, Inc.).
- Tap Get or Install to download and install it. It’s free and about 100-200 MB in size.
2. Create Your Account
- Open the app and tap Sign Up (or “Create a Free Account”).
- Enter your phone number or email address. Cash App will send a verification code via SMS or email.
- Input the code to verify your contact info.
- Create a unique username (called a “$Cashtag”)—this is like your handle for sending/receiving money (e.g., $YourName). You can change it later.
- Set a strong password and agree to the terms of service.
3. Add Personal Details and Verify Your Identity
- Enter your full legal name, date of birth, and ZIP code (for location verification).
- For full features (like higher sending limits of up to $7,500/week), verify your identity:
- Tap the profile icon (top-right corner) > Personal > Identity Verification.
- Provide your Social Security Number (SSN) last four digits. This is required for unverified accounts to upgrade.
- Verification usually happens instantly, but it can take up to 24 hours. Unverified accounts are limited to $1,000 in sends/receives per 30 days.
4. Link a Funding Source
- To send money or add funds, connect a bank account or debit card:
- Tap the Banking tab (money icon at the bottom) > Linked Banks > Link Bank.
- Choose to link via Plaid (instant, secure login to your bank) or manually enter routing/account numbers.
- Supported cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover debit cards. Credit cards can be linked but may incur fees for transactions.
- Add money: Tap Add Cash > Enter amount > Confirm. Funds draw from your linked account.
Buying Bitcoin with Cash App: Step-by-Step Guide
Cash App, developed by Block, Inc., allows U.S. users to buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin directly in the app. You must have a verified Cash App account with a linked funding source to purchase Bitcoin. Here’s how to do it:
1. Ensure Your Cash App Account Is Set Up
- Download and Install: If not already done, get Cash App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and create an account (see previous response for setup details).
- Verify Identity: For Bitcoin purchases, you need a verified account:
- Go to Profile (top-right corner) > Personal > Identity Verification.
- Provide your full name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). Full SSN may be required for higher limits or compliance.
- Verification typically completes instantly but may take up to 24 hours.
- Link a Funding Source: Ensure a bank account or debit card is linked:
- Go to Banking tab (money icon) > Linked Banks > Link Bank or Link Debit Card.
- Use Plaid for instant bank connection or manually enter routing/account numbers.
- Add funds to your Cash App balance via Add Cash if needed.
2. Navigate to the Bitcoin Section
- Open Cash App and tap the Investing tab (line graph icon at the bottom).
- Select Bitcoin (or tap the $ symbol and choose Buy Bitcoin).
- If it’s your first time, you may need to agree to Cash App’s Bitcoin terms and conditions.
3. Buy Bitcoin
- Select Amount: Enter the amount you want to buy (in USD, starting at $1). You can also choose preset amounts (e.g., $10, $50).
- Review Fees: Cash App charges a service fee (based on transaction size) and a market spread fee (varies with Bitcoin price volatility). Fees are shown before confirming.
- Example: For a $100 purchase, expect ~$1-3 in fees, depending on market conditions.
- Confirm Purchase: Choose your funding source (Cash App balance or linked bank/card). Tap Buy and authenticate with your PIN, Touch ID, or Face ID.
- Processing: Purchases are typically instant, but high network activity may cause slight delays.
